Social media have become an indispensable part of a majority of people in contemporary society. However, the debate about whether social networking websites would trigger adverse influence on us never seems to end. In my opinion, it is beneficial for us as long as we know how to use it reasonably.

Social networking websites bring unprecedented conveniences to our lives. To begin with, we can keep in touch with our friends or relatives instantly anytime and anywhere. By sharing words, pictures or videos, we can have more interactions with them regardless of geographical distance. Apart from this, social network also can expand the approaches that we make new friends. People can easily find people who share similar interests with them. For example, social websites like Facebook and Twitter provide various groups of different areas for people to participate in, so they are able to share information or collaborate with others in an easier way. In addition, since the social networks can release information effectively and efficiently, they are now widely used by governments or other officials to inform the public of the latest notices.

However, it is note-worthy that social media also have some potential drawbacks. For instance, peoples face-to-face communication skills will reduce dramatically if people indulge themselves in the virtual world; the risks of leaking personal information also cannot be ignored since we often post our true information and location on these social media.

To sum up, I suppose that the social media brings more benefits to both the society and individuals as a whole despite the potential threats if we do not use them wisely.
